Responding too quickly or not at all to what teens do and say gives them the wrong message. Let them ponder their thoughts out loud so they can hear themselves think. This will allow them the opportunity to form an opinion about their own thoughts just like they do with all the other thoughts around them. I explain how this creates connections with them and contributes to developing them into responsible citizens.

When children, teens or even adults Dabble with the Dark Side, it is often their reaction to their loss of power in their current life situation. The appeal is for them to be in charge of something. They may show this tendency in their gaming choices, their internet interests, or their choice of friends and the topics they discuss.

I point out how hormonal stimulation of endorphins and adrenalin happens when the risky nature of this dabbling makes them feel alive. It could be an indicator of suicidal ideas. It is in this deep struggle where they are trying to find some sense of personal value or the proof they have none. Don’t let it pass by your attention if you know of someone who is Dabbling with the Dark Side.

We are still experiencing the reconstruction of our home office. Dealing with the insurance company reminded me of the struggles that often happen when parenting teenagers; the insurance company has one idea concerning what needs to happen to restore our building and I have a different idea about what needs to happen.

Teenagers also have their own ideas about how things should go and in this video I talk about how you as the parent of a teenager can help to bridge the gap between what you would like to see happen and what your teenager wants and believes should happen.

Teenagers need to know and understand the facts about certain issues. It helps a lot if you also know what they believe to be the facts. You have the perspective that can help them understand some of the consequences of their actions but they have strong opinions about what is best.
