In my video about jurisdictional restrictions relating to online counseling therapy, I referred to the client or public driven nature of having therapy services available online. In this video I expand on that topic.

With almost all other services available online today, it isn’t surprising that people want to access mental health services online also. The positive aspects of obtaining this service without leaving home are very appealing to many and are desirable for many reasons. People want to have the freedom to pick the therapist they want, and the freedom to choose how to access that therapy.

It is interesting to see the reaction from clients when they realize what is available and how they can do their counseling sessions online. Their eyes light up and they are amazed at the range of possibilities and systems we have in place. They love the fact that they don’t have to drive anywhere or deal with weather.

We do have our work cut out for us as therapists and professionals but it is also important that we make sure that our jurisdictional issues don’t restrict the public.

Please have a look at this video and I hope you will consider contributing your input on this very important subject as we venture into the future of counseling therapy.

In this video I talk about the difficulty a woman has when seeking therapeutic help from a mental health professional for issues of psychological abuse within her marriage or primary relationship. I am referring to when a person lives with the often constant undermining words, actions or attitudes of her partner, until she is emotionally exhausted, and her own sense of personal worth is in question. I give a few examples of the type of hinting that occurs and comments that are said directly that can demean and debilitate a person, leaving her feeling as though she has no value to her spouse.

Assuming a counseling therapist has been chosen that understands this type of psychological abuse and has experience with emotionally damaged people, how do you go about presenting your situation? So many women feel that they have to prove to the therapist that they have a legitimate concern; however the fact that there is frustration with trying to fix the condition of the relationship and make it work with a partner is enough reason to seek assistance from a qualified mental health professional without having to explain beyond that.

Take a look at this video and please feel free to ask questions or give feedback.

On the question of Jurisdictional issues, it is absolutely important that we have an understanding of the guidelines as we go online with therapy and therapeutic practices.

Up until now jurisdictional guidelines have been concerned about regulating local area info and therapeutic services, however online counseling therapy and mental health covers the world; you can have a client anywhere the client has a computer. This brings with it many questions for mental health professionals.
In this video I review a little bit about jurisdictional issues as we continue to work towards bringing those changes to the new reality being demanded by the clients who want access to whichever therapist they choose.

Online counselling therapy is well on its way to being the way that therapy is delivered.
What do you think? Do you think that the laws should change regarding jurisdictional issues, or do you think the laws are current enough and will be able to cover the expectations regarding online therapy?

I look forward to your comments.

Moving from one addiction to another or transferring addictions is a common problem for a lot of people. For instance people that conquer their drinking addiction but now have problems with an overeating addiction.

If the pressure is very high to stop an addiction, it is easy to move from one addiction to another. When there is a need to substitute real life with an addiction it’s time to take a look at the addictive mindset. Take a look at when you first realized you were addicted. Why did the addiction seem to work? What were you using it for? What benefit did you get from it? Are there similar responses to events from your childhood?

This video is an expansion of my previous video on addictions. Maybe you have successfully dealt with one addiction but you can’t figure out why you now have a different one. Take a look at this short video. I welcome your comments and feedback.

Online Video Counselor and Relationship Expert Norm Quantz, MA from Canada interviews leading Online Therapy Researcher, Author and Consultant Dr. Stephen Goss, PhD. from Great Britain on the subject of Identifying Complexities in the New Field of Technology Assisted Counselling Therapy.

After they discuss some of the emerging terminology issues, the current variety of delivery modalities used by professionals in this burgeoning field, and recognizing the seminal contributions of people like Kate Anthony with DeeAnna Merz Nagel of Online Therapy Institute, Dr. Goss answers Mr. Quantz’s probing questions about:

MALPRACTICE INSURANCE: Dr. Goss addresses the questions of how available global malpractice insurance is, what attitudes are affecting this industry, and what is anticipated in the near future.

SECURITY: Encryption may help secure the transmission of information by email but it’s important for the therapist to be aware of the broader spectrum of security issues such as the security of information before and after the transmission. Stephen and Norm expose the importance of security issues, what therapists need to understand about security, and what is currently happening on security in this growing field of distance therapy.

JURISDICTIONAL issues revolve around perceptions and assumptions of where distance therapy is taking place and hence what laws apply. Countries differ in the regulation of therapy. Dr. Goss identifies key issues that professional practitioners need to be aware of in order to practice globally.

Norm Quantz helps wrap up the interview by encouraging therapists to expand their practice to the online environment so clients can access the expertise of the global therapist.

BIO: Stephen Goss, Ph.D., is a Lecturer in Counselling at the Tayside Institute for Health Studies at the University of Abertay, Dundee and a therapist, supervisor and researcher specialising in online counselling, evaluation of counselling and therapy services and topics related to counselling in health-care, education and private practice settings. He is a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and has over a quarter of a century of experience in counselling and related work.

His prime interests are innovative practice methods especially the use of technology to extend traditional counselling practices and developing pluralist approaches to counselling and research. His published works include Evidence-Based Counselling and Psychological Therapies (Routledge) and Technology in Counselling and Psychotherapy, A Practitioner’s Guide, (Palgrave). In 2001, he was the lead author for the first edition of the BACP Guidelines for Online Counselling and Psychotherapy and co-author for the 3rd edition, published in 2009.

A lot of therapists wonder how to respond to an emergency situation if they are physically many miles away. In this video, Effective Therapist Norm Quantz discusses the need for the therapist to get specific information in the intake session or on the intake form. Local contact numbers as well as emergency contact information must be provided so that in the event that the therapist needs to respond to a client in crisis, he or she has the required information to do so.

Norm shares an example of how an online counseling client situation would be dealt with in the video counseling format.
