What is Normal? What does Mental Health look like?

A popular discussion among mental health professionals is about mental health and what does mental health look like? Clients have a variety of ideas about this topic and the age old question “what is normal?”

Some concepts that fit with a healthy mindset are things such as the freedom to express oneself and the freedom and confidence to share that information. With that comes a sense of clarity and understanding of who these people are as individuals.

What about in the case of an abuser who comes across as healthy? In this video I introduce the subject of how a client who presents with healthy characteristics actually might not be so healthy.

I would love to have some feedback about this concept and I am looking forward to your responses and to future blog posts on this topic.

With You in Mind,
Norm

    Hi,

    I listened to your video.
    You asked a feedback concerning the definition of healthy that you use, because abuser describes themselves in a way that corresponds to this definition (express themselves and know who they are).

    It seems for me there are three options:
    1 – What abusers claim is false, they believe they knwo themselves but they don’t, and what they express isn’t their true self, aren’t their true needs;
    2 – The definition of healthy is false, which means that there is another characteristic that defines healthy persons, or maybe there is no healthy person;
    3 – Abusers are right, and your definition is right as well, which means something is missing in what you said about what is to be healthy… somethinh else is needed to be healthy….

    Sincerely, Christophe
